Be Wise in Your Water Ways — Water on Your Day

With temperatures topping 100°F and water demand rising, the City of Newcastle is reminding residents to follow the odd/even watering schedule during the summer heat.

Odd-numbered addresses should water on odd-numbered calendar days, while even-numbered addresses should water on even-numbered days. The schedule applies to both sprinkler systems and hand-watering.

“We’ve had a hot summer, and it’s not over yet,” said City Manager Kevin Self. “High temperatures increase demand on the water system, and the odd/even schedule helps spread that demand out during the times we need it most.” 

The schedule is required under Newcastle’s water agreement with Oklahoma City and is in effect year-round.

“Summertime is when our water system is working its hardest,” said Public Works Superintendent Jim Miller. “When residents follow their assigned watering days, it helps reduce peak demand and keeps water use more balanced across the system.”

The National Weather Service has issued multiple heat advisories this August as temperatures have repeatedly reached triple digits, driving up outdoor water use and demand on the system.

“When temperatures are high, evaporation increases and outdoor water use goes up,” said Water Resources Superintendent Valentine Belfiglio. “Following the schedule helps distribute that demand more evenly across the week.” 

Belfiglio encouraged residents to check sprinkler systems for broken heads, leaks and misaligned spray patterns.

“A quick check can save water and help reduce your bill,” he said. “Water landing on the street or sidewalk isn’t helping your lawn.”

The City also recommends watering early in the morning to reduce evaporation, raising mower blades to help grass retain moisture, and using rain sensors or smart irrigation controllers when possible.
