Newcastle Invites Residents to Help Shape a Safer, More Walkable Community

Published: Monday, November 3, 2025

Newcastle has always been a community of space, with wide roads, big yards, and room to breathe. But now the city is working to bring those spaces a little closer together. With neighborhoods growing and schools at the heart of daily life, Newcastle is planning for safer, more connected routes that make it easier to walk for miles around town.

The City of Newcastle will host a Walkability Open House on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Newcastle Storm Shelter (851 N. Carr Drive). The event gives residents a chance to share ideas about improving sidewalks, crossings, and connections between schools, parks, and nearby neighborhoods.

As part of a broader effort to create a long-term walkability plan, the open house will also support Newcastle’s pursuit of a SORTPO Mini Planning Grant. The city is working with Guernsey, an Oklahoma City engineering and planning firm that has partnered with Newcastle on several projects in the past. Guernsey will assist with the technical planning and gather public input during the open house.

The walkability plan will look at connections from Newcastle Public Schools to Main Street and Highway 62, as well as links from the Wyndemere neighborhood to nearby parks, the library, and schools. The goal is to identify where walking and rolling routes are most needed and how to make them safer and more connected.

Assistant City Manager Jeanette McNally said, “Creating safe paths for our kids and better connections between schools is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our residents, where they walk now, where they wish they could, and what would make the biggest difference for their families.”
