Bridge Repairs on I-44 to Begin, Travel Impacts Expected for Several Months

Published: Thursday, January 2, 2025

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) will soon begin two significant bridge rehabilitation projects on I-44, just north of Newcastle. While the 119th Street and 134th Street bridges are located several miles outside of city limits, these projects may affect residents commuting to nearby communities like Moore and South Oklahoma City.

The projects are part of ODOT’s efforts to improve safety and extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure.

Timeline and Details:

  • 119th Street Bridge: Work begins January 6, 2025, with completion expected by May 12, 2025.
  • 134th Street Bridge: Work begins May 12, 2025, with completion expected by September 15, 2025.

During construction, both bridges will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals installed to maintain flow. Most of the work will take place overnight to minimize traffic disruptions, but delays are still possible during peak hours.

Planned Improvements Include:

  • Deck repairs and a driving surface overlay to improve durability and safety.
  • Upgraded safety rails to better protect travelers.
  • Reinforced structural columns to ensure long-term stability.

The City of Newcastle will share updates from ODOT as they become available.
