Mayor Declares State of Emergency and Closure of Some City Facilities

Addressing Covid-19 Pandemic to Mitigate Spread of Virus

Published: Tuesday, March 17, 2020

Many cities, counties, and states across the nation are experiencing unprecedented and uncertain times with the rapid spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).  Federal, state, and municipal governments are continuing to work together to ensure appropriate measures are implemented in an effort to slow the spread of the disease.  At the local level, Newcastle Mayor, Karl Nail has issued an emergency proclamation detailing measures the City of Newcastle is undertaking, in cooperation with state and federal agency guidelines for the protection of Newcastle citizens, employees, and non-citizens.  We ask that all Newcastle residents recognize the importance of the emergency proclamation and following the guidelines set forth.

Precautionary measures have been established at all City facilities in an effort to limit the risk of exposure to citizens and employees alike.  Residents, visitors, and vendors who come to any of the City’s facilities should expect changes in the way our employees are now conducting business.  As always, providing exceptional customer service is our main priority and goal.  However, please be patient and understanding as our employees adapt and work within these new mandated changes for the safety of everyone.

The City of Newcastle stands ready to work with and assist residents who may be affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19).  The City understands the impacts of this illness may go beyond physical limitations and may have financial implications for some citizens.  Newcastle Public Works Authority has been instructed to work with those individuals personally affected by the disease, regarding utility late fees and cut-offs.  Residents may call the Newcastle Public Works Authority for further information.

Severe storm season is rapidly approaching and many residents rely on the Newcastle Community Storm Shelter for a place of refuge.  With the threat of Coronavirus, residents/non-residents who seek refuge at the community storm shelter place themselves at risk for exposure.  Masks and gloves are currently not available at the shelter.  At this time, Newcastle Emergency Management anticipates the community storm shelter will only open for very specific emergency situations.  When coming to the community storm shelter in the event of an emergency, please follow instructions provided by staff upon entering.  All residents are encouraged to begin thinking about emergency preparedness plans and where to take shelter if necessary, during this storm season.

The unprecedented and uncertain times we are all experiencing is temporary.  We are all in this together and we will solve this together.
